Planet Earth (2006)

Rating: 1.3

This alleged 'greatest documentary,' this 'Planet Earth,' parades its purported beauty like a gaudy trinket. One is made to feel as if they are merely an uninvolved specter, hovering above the land like a drone, passively ingesting visual pornography of animals engaged in their desperate survival strategies. This is not art; this is National Geographic-style exploitation masquerading as high-minded environmentalism. And this 'breathtaking' cinematography? It only papers over the inherent ugliness of nature's raw struggle; these images of predator and prey play out like some brutal ballet choreographed by a detached, indifferent god. As if the spectacle was somehow for our entertainment. The narration, delivered with such practiced gentility, is nothing more than a condescending guide, pointing out the obvious to those who mistake 'amazing' for profound insight.
